Here are some actions you can take as you are waiting for your plumber to arrive:

Leaks

• With a leak, you will have to find the main water valve for that specific appliance and turn it off.
• For a sink, the valve may be located underneath the cabinet or counter.
• As for toilets, it will be located underneath the toilet and against the wall.
• With a washing machine appliance, the valves will be behind the machine connected to the back wall.
• In each situation, you will need to turn the valve clockwise to turn the water off.
• Lastly, if you are having problems with other areas in your household, you can turn off the entire water supply for the house.

Clogged Drains

• Are you dealing with a clogged drain? Try a baking soda and vinegar solution.
• First, boil some water in a kettle, and pour it down your clogged drain, reserving some of the liquid for later.
• Then, take a mixture of 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of white vinegar and pour the liquid down the drain.
• Leave the liquid to sit for about 10-15 minutes.
• Finally, proceed to pour the reserved boiling water down the drain.

Flooding

• In situations where you have flooding, first find the source of the flooding and cut off the water source. You will have to find the main water valves for the appliance.
• If you do not know where the water is flowing from, turn off the main water supply valve, which connects to the whole house.
• If needed, turn off all electricity. This is especially important in situations where an entire floor space, such as a basement, is flooded with water. You don’t want to end up in a dangerous situation where you end up accidentally electrocuting yourself.
• Remove any important items from the flooding, such as furniture.

Burst Pipes

• The first step will be to locate the main water supply valve and turn off the water.
• Find the source of the burst pipe.
• One way to tell if the burst pipe is located in the walls is if the ceiling or drywall is displaying water stains.
• Use towels to clean up any puddles, and buckets to contain any leakage.
• As you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, you can create a temporary solution if you found a leak in the pipe.
• Plumber’s tape and plumber’s putty are effective tools that can help enclose a pipe’s small hole or crack.
• Be sure to let your plumber know the situation and inform them of where you located the busted pipe.
